Editorial: Southern Hospitality, Just a Way of Life

Southern Hospitality isn’t just a saying or a catchphrase it almost becomes a way of life, when you grow up in the South. Growing up in the smallest of cities in East Alabama- so small and quaint, even finding it on the map would prove to be challenging. Many of us were raised to respect our elders. The common courtesy to say “yes ma’am” and “no sir”. Southern hospitality is just a way of life. Weather it is sipping lemonade or sweet tea on your front porch or having Sunday dinner at grandma’s house. Southern hospitality has several trends that…

Editorial: Are You Color Blind?

Editorial: Are You Color Blind?

What does it mean to be color blind? According to Google, the definition of color blind is, “not influenced by racial prejudice.” Basically, that means you do not notice someone’s race when you first meet them. A couple of months ago I attended one of the many, “Being Black in America” panels Housing and Residence life host once a semester and it was intriguing. To paraphrase what our host that night said, “white people act like they do not see color because if they did it would provoke white guilt, something we do not want to feel.” So, I wondered,…

As February comes to a close, the Warhawks softball team sits at a 5-2 record. Starting the season off with not only a win, but a 9-0 shutout against the University of Mobile in the first tournament of the season was definitely the start the Warhawks wanted to get. The Warhawks finished the Gulf Coast invitational tournament with a 3-1 record, falling only to the University of North Georgia with a nail biting 5-4 score. In their second tournament of the season, the GSC Opening Weekend Festival, the Warhawks came out on top again with a 2-1 record. While the…

Backstage Spotlight: Marcus Godbee

When watching a movie or play, the focus and praises are typically directed towards the actors, but those behind the camera, curtain, lights or construction of the production are sometimes left out of the congratulatory applause. Those who aren’t center stage and lurk in the shadows of backstage are just as important to the success, and failure, of any production just as much as the spotlight stealing actor on stage. This isn’t Marcus Godbee’s first time being a part of the backstage crew at Theatre AUM. He has directed scenes for Theatre AUM’s Liberty & Justice and was the Assistant…

‘Stone Soup Project’ Fending Off Hunger

A few years ago, a group of University Honors Program students conducted a survey that found that over one-third of AUM students experience food insecurity. To help address this issue, the honors students created a food pantry. The food pantry, which is student-led, is open to all AUM students. It is located on the third floor of the Taylor Center, just past the Counseling Center, and is open every Monday and Tuesday from 1–4 p.m. No personal information is taken so that students can remain anonymous and it costs nothing for the students. Because the food pantry is funded entirely…
