Students, are you worried about ordering your food and staying socially distant? Never fear, the GET app is here! Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) has introduced the GET app to help with food orders while maintaining social distancing protocols. Students can order their meals through the app, and once the order is complete they receive a set time for when their food is ready for pick up.
I spoke with Dining Coordinator Ashley Thorne about the GET app today. When asked about how the app has helped to feed students, Thorne responded, “ Last year when lunch time came, everyone would rush in and swarm the cafeteria, and we were trying to figure out the best way to avoid that especially now with coronavirus and social distancing going on.”
Thorne went on to say, “A lot of food businesses have started to switch to apps because it’s simple and easy to get everything you need in the comfort of your home.” Thorne also mentioned that their end goal is to deliver food to students, but due to lack of staff they haven’t been able to implement it just yet.
Thorne also mentioned GET has been having some technical issues, but they are working on trying to figure out these issues and get them resolved so all students can benefit from the app. When asked about plans to use GET in the future, Thorne replied, “The app has actually been around for a while, and it was an idea we had looked into and somewhat kept in our back pockets.”
Thorne continued, “When COVID hit, we decided now would be the perfect time to bring it out, and it will only get better as time goes on.” I also spoke with Vice-Chancellor of Finance & Administration Scott Parsons, and he added, “The app actually has more functionality than just ordering food. You can add money to your AUM account, check out books from the library, and I think it will be the first steps towards having an online ID system.”
Sounds like AUM has big plans for the GET app, so students be on the lookout!
