Holiday Travels

BY: Alecia Hicks Seasons are changing, the leaves are falling, and Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. Everyone is excited to be finishing up the Fall 2021 semester. For some people, this means traveling to a different state. For others, this might mean hopping on a plane to go back to a completely different country. For some, this means taking a short trip across town to see family. Whatever transportation you have to take, it is always a good idea to take the safest measures possible when traveling during the holidays. The National Safety Council (NSC) says that traveling by car has “the highest fatality rate of any major form of transportation based on fatalities per passenger mile.” It is also a time where higher alcohol consumption happens due to celebration...

Biden and Afghanistan

BY: Kendra Carpenter In 2001, right after United States citizens’ lives completely changed with 9/11, Afghanistan was taken by storm to capture leader Osama Bin Laden. Since 2001, the U.S armed forces have been fighting while continuing to be attacked. In 2014, the Afghan National Security Forces were put in charge and still took multiple defeats. The U.S sent more troops over in 2017 to continue to attempt to overthrow the Taliban’s troops. Between 2020 and 2021, attacks have gotten increasingly worse. Women having rights is also at high risk as well.  The Taliban do plan on reversing the rights that women and young girls once had.  These are all very important and terrifying events that are still happening. With that being said, our current U.S President Joe Biden has pu...

No Female Workers

BY: Kendra Carpenter In Kabul, Afghanistan, the female employees have all been instructed to stay at home. If the job can be done by a man, then they are advised not to work at this time. During this time, lives are still being threatened and bombs are still going off. Witnesses have said recently five individuals were killed due to a massive explosion. In that explosion, a child and three border police officers were killed. In my opinion, doing this to keep women from working is more than sickening. This all surrounds stopping women from working with scare tactics. in the past, not only could women and children not work, but they also couldn’t attend school, which leaves them to be complete vegetables in almost all aspects of life. Exceptions are being made when it comes to jobs that ...

U.S. Marines Killed in Afghanistan Bombing

BY: Kendra Carpenter During September in the State of California, there were families and friends mourning the deaths of Marines that were killed in a major bombing in Afghanistan. Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui was one of the many that lost their lives trying to save the people of Afghanistan. He was only twenty years old. Many gathered in a church in Riverside to pay respects to the fallen Marine. There was a total of thirteen marines killed while in Afghanistan, and more are continuing to die during this battle between the United States and the Taliban to attempt to bring peace to Afghanistan.  Even though no one wants to celebrate his death, Pastor Wozinak, who is over the Riverside church, stated that the Marine saved three families by taking them to safety before going back to the a...

Kyrie Irving Sits Out Due to Vaccination Status

BY: Kendra Carpenter NBC News recently stated that professional basketball player Kyrie Irving, who is the guard for the Brooklyn Nets, will not be allowed to play or practice with the team until he is vaccinated, even with him being one of the most important players on the team. Sean Marks, who is the coach of the team, wants Irving to be completely vaccinated to play, and the Barclays Center in New York has a stern rule that you must have at least one COVID-19 vaccine in order to enter the indoor gyms. Marks stated that the team has no issues with Irving making the choice to not get vaccinated.  In my opinion, the player should be allowed to play, vaccinated or not. He is a very important piece to the team and should not be penalized for his choice not to get vaccinated. Righ...

Road to Victory

BY: Alecia Hicks AUM’s volleyball team is starting the season off with some heat. The team has been barrelling through the season with competitive victories. In the first couple of months, the girls have made their way through three invitational rounds: the USC Aiken Invitational, Shark Invitational and Reddie-Tiger Invitational.  All of the girls have been working very hard to make sure that the team stays on a steady incline as they make their way to the championship at the end of the season. The team’s first official game was back in September against the North Greenville Knights. The girls dominated in all five sets taking the win back home. Since then, the team has won a total of 15 out of 26 games and plans on winning many more.  The most recent home game had an outstanding...
