The GSC Postpones Fall Sports

BY: Jayla Brown The spread of COVID-19 has shifted the way colleges and universities are being run for the fall semester, including their athletic departments. Many athletic departments have had to postpone fall athletics until the spring. Auburn University at Montgomery's (AUM) athletic department is included. On August 12, 2020, The Gulf South Conference (GSC) postponed basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball until January 2021. The announcement was given by the GSC Board of Directors. The board classified these sports as high risk and high contact according to the (NCAA). I was able to catch up with athletic director Jessie Rosa about the future of AUM athletics. Auburn Football Starts Sept. 26; Who Will Be in the Stands?

BY: Kameron Berry For countless years Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium has held roughly 87,000 screaming fans, but due to COVID-19 Auburn has announced it will only allow 20% capacity inside for this upcoming football season. In accordance with the Southeastern Conference’s (SEC) safety guidelines, Auburn has decided that tickets outside of premium seating and tickets designated for home and visiting team coach and player guests will go to the Auburn students for their Sept. 26 game against Kentucky. I spoke with Auburn student Daniel Richardson, who is a part of the Auburn University Athletic’s grounds crew that works on Pat Dye Field. Richardson said, “ I think it’s great that the university decided to give the tickets to the students, we only have a limited amount of time here a...

Zoom Etiquette

BY: Jessica Alldredge School is back in session! In only five months, boy, how the times have changed. Virtual classes are now a normal thing, and Zoom is an application almost everyone is using. New technology is something we have to get used to these days.  While we’re figuring out how to make sure we don’t turn into a potato because of a filter in the middle of an online class, or trying to make sure we unmute our microphones when we speak, where does that leave the social aspect and how we interact during classes? There are certain understood expectations when it comes to a physical class. Be on time, don’t use your phone, pay attention, take notes and be respectful to the teacher and your classmates. These are familiar and again, understood. But with the advent of v...

Mental Health in the Time of Covid-19

BY: Jessica Alldredge No one could have ever planned for the curve-ball 2020 has been. No one ever expected to be battling a pandemic when they rang in the New Year. The changes that have impacted us as a whole this year have left many of us reeling and perhaps feeling very out of touch. Social distance was enacted, and many of us may have been missing that social component in our lives. Jobs disappeared, worry about health increased, and school culture changed drastically. All of these things that we weren’t expecting are suddenly a cause of deep depression and anxiety. How do you take care of your mental health when things turn upside down? Brittany Asuncion, a Mental Health Therapist and a Counselor at the Auburn University at Montgomery Counseling Center, was kind enough ...

How Is AUM Adjusting to Covid-19 on Campus?

BY: Jayla Brown Coronavirus slammed the nation back in spring of this year, shutting down school and work for most people. Fast forward to fall, and everyone has a new normal. On July 15, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, among other governors, issued a statewide ordinance that required everyone to wear a mask. This ordinance was set to expire on July 31 for Alabamians, but it has since then been extended throughout October. There were many questions concerning college students, faculty and staff with the Fall semester coming as quickly as it did. Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is one of many colleges and universities that decided to resume on campus. The University has made numerous accommodations and changes to better benefit the students and staff. Exactly what has AUM c...

AUM Introduces App to Help with Social Distancing in Café

BY: Kameron Berry Students, are you worried about ordering your food and staying socially distant? Never fear, the GET app is here! Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) has introduced the GET app to help with food orders while maintaining social distancing protocols. Students can order their meals through the app, and once the order is complete they receive a set time for when their food is ready for pick up. I spoke with Dining Coordinator Ashley Thorne about the GET app today. When asked about how the app has helped to feed students, Thorne responded, “ Last year when lunch time came, everyone would rush in and swarm the cafeteria, and we were trying to figure out the best way to avoid that especially now with coronavirus and social distancing going on.” Thorne went on to...

The New Normal: Masks, Everything You Need to Know

BY: Jessica Alldredge It’s the new normal, masks are everywhere. This is for our protection when we can’t keep six feet of distance between ourselves and other people. With all the different types of masks that have become available, how do you choose and what will protect you the most? The CDC guidelines state that masks should have two or more layers. Including a filter is also advised but not as necessary as the mask itself. The material should be breathable and fit snug against your face with no gaps. Masks also shouldn’t be vinyl or plastic or include any kind of valves or vents.  So with all this information readily available, let’s figure out what works and what doesn’t.
