People guard themselves with the clothes that they wear. Fashion is a free range of expression–people can express their creativity and their level of comfort. Having an awesome outfit can really boost your mood. You often hear the famous quote, “If you look good, you feel good.” I couldn’t agree more. I used to think that it was just something to say to make yourself feel better, but I’ve had my fair share of bad days. Wearing something that brings you comfort or happy memories can really boost your day, whether it’s good or bad.
Confidence comes from your sense of style and appearance. My dad always told me to make sure I look appropriate every time I leave the house. Of course, I didn’t always appreciate that golden token, but it isn’t just about making yourself presentable for others–it’s good for you! You could have a not-so-great day, but your outfit can shield you from making your day terrible. You can look at yourself and feel comfortable that you are in your favorite hoodie that represents your favorite cause, your faded ball cap that your dad gave to you as a gift, or your blue jeans that are littered with holes from great memories. Memories and moments may be easy to forget, but you don’t forget how you feel when you wear the clothes associated with them.
I love fashion. I enjoyed asking around campus about students’ favorite types of clothing. I asked a few questions including: “What does your outfit say about you?”, “How do you feel when you have on a perfect outfit?”, and “When you pick an outfit, what do you think?” Toria Carter, a psychology senior, stated that her outfits “express how I’m (she’s) feeling at the moment.” When asked how she feels when she has on the perfect outfit, Toria said, “Sensational,” and, “Like I can conquer the world.” I asked Toria what she thinks about when she is picking out an outfit. She expressed that she thinks about “comfort, affordability, and style.” I’ve been thinking about this topic in a deeper manner, so I asked Toria what does she thinks when she hears: “Your outfit is your armor.” She explained, “My outfit gives me the confidence to go out into the world and handle whatever problems come my way.”
I have a huge wool jacket that I wear in the winter time. Every time I wear it, I feel secure, comfy, and warm. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my jacket, but not because of the way it looks. It’s about how they felt when they tried on my jacket. The security of one article of clothing felt like home.
