Why Do People Want to Be Scared?

The quickened heartbeats, the rush of adrenaline, and what all Halloween lovers want most: the fear. Why do people want to be scared? Halloween is the one time of year that people can feel deep fear and adventures. This time of year, people can directly experience “fight or flight.” This is the time where people can throw safety and security to the wind and try heart pumping experiences!

Kaylin Finch, Early Childhood Education senior, enjoys the suspense. She stated, “I like thrillers because I feel like they keep you on the edge of your seat. You don’t know what to expect next, so it keeps your adrenaline going. They also keep you engaged throughout the entire movie. I don’t necessarily like being scared, but I like not knowing what’s next.” She explained that she wouldn’t pass up the opportunity to watch scary movies or maybe a go on a group trip to a haunted house. The more people in attendance, the better.

Halloween may not be my favorite holiday, but I love the thrill as much as the next person. Growing up, I seriously did not like anything remotely scary. Thanks to Jeepers Creepers, Final Destination, and IT, I steered clear of thrills and chills. When I got older, I just started taking the scary out of the movies. For example, the IT clown goes after Derry residents– more specifically, children. If I don’t fit into those categories, I’m safe. Now, that logic surely doesn’t work if I want to go to a haunted house, but at least I’ll be safe from scary movies.

October is a time for excitement! It’s the one time out of the year that everyone can relax from the daily grunge. Regardless, if you aren’t into scary movies or haunted houses, there is a less extreme side as well. For example, family halloween movies like Disney’s Halloweentown, going trunk-or-treating with churches, or pumpkin carving. There’s something for everyone. I know there are some people who really hate Halloween because they don’t like to be scared, but there are other things to participate that won’t cause a panic attack.
