Female Voices Showcase 2018

Auburn University Montgomery’s theatre is producing a showcase called “Female Voices.” The showcase consists of scenes and monologues written female playwrights. The number of female playwrights has significantly increased in the past few decades. Theatre AUM wishes to showcase their talent. “Today, theatre companies are actively seeking new works written by women,” said Theatre Professor Val Winkelman. “It has been a great experience to research and revisit some well- known, classic favorites as well as to explore contemporary plays written by prominent female playwrights.”

Some of the topics that the plays explore are puberty, romance sexuality, equality, art, ambition and prejudice. “We chose this theme last spring and the timing could not have been more perfect,” Winkelman said. “To feature the point of view and perspective of these female voices at a time when many of them are being heard, listened to, and unfortunately, believed for the first time is a chance for some powerful and evocative storytelling. We hope the audience will find our selections entertaining, inspiring, and relevant.”

“Female Voices” is the first show of Theatre AUM’s action-packed season. A season that includes “Child’s Play,” by Kevin Ferguson, “Matt and Ben,” by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers, and “Arcadia,” by Tom Stoppard. “I am extremely excited about our upcoming season,” Winkelman said. “Every show offers our students outstanding opportunities to gain a wide array of experiential learning, use critical thinking, and problem-solving techniques. This season offers exposure to well written, thought provoking, insightful literature incorporating challenging subject matter and mature content that resonates.”

Showtimes and dates for “Female Voices” are Sept. 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 at 7:30 p.m. The show closes Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. AUM’s theatre is located in the Taylor Center.
