Summer Vacation on a Budget

BY: Morgan Thayer

With the end of the semester approaching and summer on the horizon, it is hard to stay focused on finals when all you can think about is sun, fun, and adventures. No one wants to spend their entire summer cooped up in a stuffy house but if you are like me, you are broke. Summer adventures can become costly quick, and let’s all be real- nobody actually has the money for a summer vacation abroad in Paris where life seems like a rom-com for two months straight. So what are some fun things we can do to make the most out of our summer months that will not cost us our left arm and future child?

Road Trip

Grab a friend, hop in the car, and travel somewhere close to where you live and explore everything that place has to offer. Most times you can find free museums, parks, stores, and random gems hidden in cities you never even knew about.

Get Outdoors

Slap on the sunscreen and get outside. Take a hike, have a picnic, have a water balloon fight- whatever makes you happy. Get outside and soak up some good (and free) vitamin D.

F R E E

Look into the free activities, festivals, and other events going on in your city. During the summer months, cities are known to have free outdoor movies, festivals, and maybe even a concert or two.

Explore Your Hometown

Be a tourist in your own town. Visit the local museums you have driven by a thousand times, go to the farmers market, or volunteer at a summer camp. Pretend you are new in town and learn about all the fun adventures your town has to offer.

Be Spontaneous

Keep an open mind and remember that in about two months, you will be stuck in the library again studying and trying to get those last 100 words on your paper. Go on late night ice cream trips, pick berries, or take random photoshoots- just keep an open mind and enjoy these carefree months.
