In a world that is changing faster than we can keep up, Auburn University at Montgomery
(AUM) has an opportunity to create a significant effect by expanding its online degree
programs. This change could help current and future students, alumni and the community
alike. Expanding online degrees would address crucial challenges by enhancing access to
education, embracing new learning styles and increasing career growth opportunities.
Expanding online degrees can greatly improve access to education. Many students,
especially those working full-time, raising families, or living farther from campus, find it
hard to attend in-person classes. Online programs give students the freedom to learn from
any location, making education accessible no matter where they are.
Worldwide, 49% of students have completed some sort of online learning. Online learning
is the fastest-growing market in the education industry – it has grown 900% since its
creation in 2000. For AUM, offering more online options means it can serve students who
might otherwise struggle to complete their education. This flexibility helps a diverse group
of students, including those balancing multiple responsibilities or living in remote
locations.
The COVID-19 pandemic showed everyone that online learning is not only possible but
also effective. Students have increasingly preferred online courses because they offer
flexibility and convenience. Seventy percent of students say online learning is better than traditional
classroom learning. This preference reflects students’ desire to manage their academic
and personal lives more effectively. By expanding online degrees, AUM can meet these
preferences and stay competitive with other universities offering flexible learning options.
Schools that don’t adapt may lose students to institutions that provide the convenience
they’re looking for.
Expanding online programs is also crucial for supporting alumni and their career growth.
The job market is always changing, and online degrees offer a way for professionals to keep
up with new skills without leaving their jobs.
For alumni, continuing their education online without quitting their jobs is especially
important. Expanding online degree options helps them advance in their careers while
continuing to work. Online learning and training can improve employee performance by
15% to 25%.
Some argue that expanding online programs could make an AUM degree less valuable.
They worry that reducing face-to-face interactions and the traditional college experience
might lower academic standards and weaken the campus community. While these
concerns are worth considering, they do not outweigh the benefits of online program
expansion.
First, technology has greatly improved online learning. Modern online platforms include
interactive features like virtual classrooms, discussion forums, and live feedback. These
tools can provide an engaging learning experience similar to or even better than in-person
classes. Many online programs also offer live Zoom meetings to ensure students can
interact with instructors and their classmates.
Second, studies have shown that online learning can be as effective as traditional
education. A review by the U.S. Department of Education found that students in online
courses often perform better than those in face-to-face classes. This is mainly due to the
flexibility and personalized pace that online learning allows.
Finally, AUM can address concerns about quality by ensuring its online programs meet the
same high standards as its on-campus courses. This involves careful course design,
quality checks, and regular evaluations to guarantee that online students receive a
valuable education.
Expanding online degree options at AUM is a necessary step to meet the needs of current
and prospective students, alumni, and the community. It enhances access to education,
aligns with modern learning preferences, and supports career development. Addressing
concerns about online learning quality will help ensure this expansion is successful and
will keep the university’s commitment to academic excellence. AUM should move forward
with expanding its online degree offerings to better serve its students and alumni while
staying competitive in the evolving world of higher education.
