MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) students gathered for painting, snacks and fellowship at InterVarsity Christian Fellowship’s Christ and Canvases event on the evening of Jan. 27.
With the theme, “Where creativity meets worship,” the event provided a space for students to express themselves artistically while connecting with fellow believers.
Held in Taylor Center 223, Christ and Canvases encouraged students to create meaningful art while engaging in worship.
Upon entrance, students were greeted by student leader, Eriona Huguley, and given free Bibles. Huguley expressed the main purpose of the event, saying, “We wanted to create a space for people to relax and paint and get a nice vibe.”
Students considered the event to be more than just a creative outlet, but a chance to build community. Sophomore English major Joshua Stout commented on the importance of community at this event and others, stating, “The community that you build is the most important and impactful part and will always be the most impactful part.” Stout highlighted that a well-organized event is nothing without the people that it brings together.
Junior General Biology major Da’Vine Bush highlighted the significant role of the gospel music that accompanied the painting and fellowship. Bush said InterVarsity’s choice of music created a sense of openness in the room. She and other students sang along and danced as they created. She noted, “people were expressing themselves and, I don’t think they would be expressing themselves if that music wasn’t playing.” Bush said that she would attend a Christ and Canvases event again in the future.
Attendees bonded, engaging in lighthearted conversation and sharing the meanings and inspirations behind their art pieces.
Intervarsity brings some special events like this one to campus, but members attend regularly scheduled meetings. The club hosts weekly small groups meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. These meetings are open to all student life. Small groups allow students to gather, enjoy food, study the Bible, ask difficult questions and make friends. The club aims to continue providing inviting spaces for students to grow spiritually and socially.
By hosting more events like Christ and Canvases, InterVarsity hopes to foster meaningful connections within the AUM student community through fellowship, worship and creativity.
