The month of October isn’t only known for Halloween — it’s a month that also brings awareness to breast cancer. This month is also a great time for people to gain a better understanding of what breast cancer truly is and help those who may be walking through that disease.
During the month of October, breast cancer events and campaigns are ramped up an extra notch. One of the easiest ways to help raise awareness is by simply wearing pink, but there are other ways to engage during the month.
There are plenty of local and on-campus events that are being held during the month. In Montgomery, there will be a walk called “Making Strides of Montgomery” hosted by the American Cancer Society. The event will be Oct. 19 at 8:30 a.m. at the Montgomery Train Shed. After check-in there will be an opening ceremony, and the walk will follow that. There will be a special area for breast cancer survivors at the event as well.
AUM’s Zeta Tau Alpha sorority’s philanthropy is breast cancer awareness, so during the month of October there are a ton of on-campus events being held. ZTA and AUM’s Panhellenic Vice President, Hanna Reid, said, “ZTA has an annual Think Pink Week where we have a table outside Goodwyn Hall. During this week, we have a bake sale and sell pink lemonade.”
ZTA is also hosting a pink out volleyball game where the gym will be decorated and they will be passing out pink ribbons. They will honor any breast cancer survivors at the game.
In addition, ZTA will be hosting a golf tournament to raise money for their foundation. Reid said, “The student body can help by supporting any of the events we hold, like buying baked goods when we sell them at the table, coming to the pink out game, and signing up to participate in our annual philanthropy events.”
