Auburn University at Montgomery’s men’s soccer team climbs to second place in the Gulf South Conference after beating Spring Hill College and University of West Florida.
AUM beat Spring Hill, the 2018 GSC champions, 4-1. Spring Hill outshot the Warhawks 22 to 12 shots, but both teams had five shots on goal the whole game. AUM had a total of 14 fouls, while Spring Hill only had nine.
Renan Diniz had three shots, two shots on goal, and two goals throughout the game. Phillip Spickenbaum had four shots, one shot on goal, and one goal during the match. Andrew Elkins had two shots, one shot on goal, and one goal. Arnaud Baron took one shot and picked up one assist during the game.
The following Sunday, the Warhawks beat #6 West Florida 1-0. AUM was the first team all season to beat the Argonauts. West Florida outshot AUM 17 to 8. Both teams had four shots on goal for the duration of the game. The Warhawks fouled West Florida 14 times, while the Argonauts fouled the Warhawks 13 times.
Tate Dean scored the only goal of the match and had one shot and one shot on goal. Diniz had two shots, one of them being on target, and one assist. Baron had one shot and one assist during the game and Eric Besse had one shot and one shot on goal.
Following the two games, the GSC named Diniz the GSC Player of the Week and named Dean the GSC Defender of the Week. Besse was nominated the GSC Freshman of the Week, but was beat out by Mississippi College player, Cameron Moser.
This week, alongside West Florida, AUM was featured in the latest Division II National Men’s Soccer Poll. They also moved up to number five on the South Regional Poll.
The Warhawks will face the University of West Alabama on Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. at home. AUM looks to get revenge for the last three years they have fallen short from a win from UAH. With West Alabama, they tied last year’s game and lost the previous three years, so they will look for a huge win against them as well.
