Auburn University at Montgomery’s New Art Exhibit

By: Lex Wedgworth

Auburn University at Montgomery(AUM) is diving into the world of art and what comes with it. What they have done is opened a new art exhibit that features the designs of Mike Winkelman and Val Winkelman at the McDermott Art Gallery at AUM. The Winkelman’s exhibit has been accessible since Feb. 2 and will be accessible Monday to Friday to students until March 23. The exhibit is called the “Art of Making Art: The Designs of Mike and Val Winkelman.” Mike Winkelman and Val Winkelman are theater and communication professors and “…will get a glimpse into the two faculty members’ research, teaching, and service over their careers at AUM, which spans three decades”, according to mcdermott-art-gallery-goes-behind-the-curtain-for-winkelman-exhibit.

The McDermott Art Gallery’s motive for all this is to show what happens behind the scenes in the theater. On Feb. 20 people involved in AUM as well as students can go to an artist talk on the exhibit from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Goodwyn Hall in room 109. Val Winkelman said that she and her husband Mike Winkelman have been: “…collaborating on theater productions since 1981 and here at AUM since 1990” according to the website. mcdermott-art-gallery-goes-behind-the-curtain-for-winkelman-exhibit. The people that helped make this happen include the generous McDermott family along with AUM’s Dean McMichael and the AUM lecture committee.

Auburn University at Montgomery is simply doing great things in inspiring students to become more involved within the community around them. To get a view into what AUM’s theater program has to offer, go to the website and click the “community resources” tab. There they will have upcoming events, like the Winkelman exhibit, as well as their mission statement, and will answer any questions you may have in general. To also find more information about the Winkelman exhibit, simply go to the search tab and type in something regarding the exhibit and it will pop up. The Mike and Val Winkelman exhibit will not fall short of showing you what happens behind the curtain in the theater program at AUM so make sure to stop by before March 23 this semester.
