What Happened to Home Ec?

BY: Savanna Pruitt If you ask the average college student how to file taxes, write a professional cover letter, or open an investment account, you will likely be met with a panicked stare or a nervous laugh. Many young adults have no idea how to do these things on their own, and it’s not necessarily their fault. Teens and young adults today lack many of the skills needed to succeed financially and professionally, and it’s due in part to a simple lack of education.  In 1909, MIT Sanitary Engineer Mary Richards founded the American Home Economics Association (AHEA), now known as the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (AAFCS). According to AAFCS, Richards and other members believed that “students who chose home economics as a field of study would not only be be...

The Incredible Rise of Influencer Marketing

BY: Savanna Pruitt Have you ever purchased a product because your favorite YouTuber posted an entire vlog series all about how it changed their life? If so, your favorite YouTuber is an influencer, and your purchase was driven by influencer marketing.  According to CommPRO, an influencer is “someone who has influence over others’ buying decisions.” Today, the term is most commonly applied to social media personalities who work with companies to generate revenue and increase brand awareness. The average influencer works to build their reputation and forge a genuine connection with their audience. In turn, the audience trusts or admires the influencer and is willing to make purchases based on that influencer’s recommendations. The audience is turned on to new products, the brands...

There are lots of things you can do to make hanging out at home much more enjoyable for your close friends and family members. Here are a few great tips for entertaining safely at your home this summer.  Keep it outdoors. It’s generally a lot easier to maintain a healthy social distance outside than it is indoors. This is the perfect opportunity to get your people together and have a nice meal outdoors! Nothing says, “Summer is here!” like a cookout in the backyard with friends and family. Even if you don’t have tables or benches to seat your guests at, you can still hold your party outdoors. Just turn it into a picnic and seat every...

6 Easy Ways to Prevent and Treat Mask-Related Skin Issues

BY: Savanna Pruitt We’ve been wearing masks to try and cut down on the spread of COVID-19 for well over a year now, and many of us have new or more noticeable skin issues to prove it. Whether your skin is naturally oily and acne-prone or dry, wearing a face mask could really be harming your face.  Unfortunately, masks tend to trap heat, oils and sweat on the surface of your skin. Since there isn’t much airflow happening under the mask, those oils and sweat droplets have nowhere to go but inside your pores. This is what causes acne. When you see pimples and blackheads popping up around your nose, chin and mouth, your first instinct might be to start vigorously washing your face several times a day. While washing your face is definitely an important skincare practice, overwashing...

“It’s Not Easy Being Green”: Understanding and Recognizing Corporate Greenwashing

BY: Savanna Pruitt Given the state of our global environment and growing concerns about Earth’s future, it makes sense that modern companies are doing everything they can to ease consumers’ minds and persuade them to keep buying. According to a recent survey conducted by Nielsen IQ,  66% of consumers are actually willing to pay more for sustainable products, and over half of those willing are “influenced by key sustainability factors, such as a product being made from fresh, natural and/or organic ingredients (69%), a company being environmentally friendly (58%), and company being known for its commitment to social value (56%).” Most companies and corporations are well aware of this trend in commerce, and they’re eager to cash in on it. As a result, some resort to corporate greenw...

Warhawk Volleyball Season Ends in GSC Semifinal

BY: Hannah Long The Lady Warhawks volleyball team had a heck of a season. They finished 4-1 in conference play and 6-2 overall. With this kind of record, they held the quarterfinals of the GSC championship series at their home court. Facing Valdosta State University and winning 3-0, the lady Warhawks advanced to the semifinals to face the Chargers of UAH in Hoover, Ala.  Although the Warhawks played tough, it wasn’t tough enough. The Chargers took the game and won 3-1.  Some star players to recognize in that semifinal game are Mariane Cassiano, Nyah Wittlesey and Giada Pais-Marden, who led the Warhawks offensively. Isadora Nicolai, the junior setter, finished with 48 assists and 10 digs against UAH.  The Chargers took sets one and two, but the Warhawks answered by taking ...

AUM vs Delta State Recap

BY: Hannah Long The Warhawks of AUM faced the Statesmen of Delta State in a three game series on April 11 and 12.  Game one was a rollercoaster of emotions for both teams. The Statesmen struck first, scoring on a wild pitch by Troy Jones. They scored again in the fourth inning, now leading 4-0.  In the fifth inning, the Warhawks got on the board with an RBI by Hartsfield, making the score 4-1. Delta State scored again, making it 5-1 in the sixth inning, but AUM came back from that deficit and put four runs on the board, making the score 5-5.  Senior Grayson Blackwell is the man to thank for tying the score when he drove in three runs off of a home run. It was his second home run of the season.  The Statesmen were hard to stop, and they kept running up th...

Warhawks Fall Short in All Three Games vs Mississippi College

BY: Hannah Long The AUM baseball team set out to face the Choctaws of Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. on April 17 and 18. This series was a big one for the Warhawks. The GSC tournament is coming up, and they needed this weekend to be in their favor.  Game one started off hot for AUM as they scored one run in the first inning to kick things off. Senior Troy Jones pitched eight innings, only allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out six Choctaws.  The Choctaws answered AUM’s one run and scored a run in the second inning, bringing the game to a tie. The fourth and fifth innings were quiet, but Mississippi College woke up and scored another run in the sixth, putting them within one run of the Warhawks. They scored again in the eighth, making the game 3-1. The...

Morning Classes Vs Afternoon Classes

BY: Lashundra Daniels Students should consider scheduling morning classes when making class schedules for the semester. Imagine waking up super early and fighting through morning traffic just to arrive at an 8 a.m. Theatre Appreciation class. It sounds stressful, but I promise you it is not all that bad. I have lived it and can attest to the fact that I made it through that semester without dropping the class. No two students are the same, and some of us are not morning people. That is okay. If you know your limits and what works best for you, I encourage you to continue doing that. However, I like to look at the positive aspects of taking early morning courses rather than late afternoon courses.  Every morning professor I have encountered at AUM has been super bubbly in the...

Advice to 2021 Graduates: To Walk or Not to Walk?

BY: Lashundra Daniels Walking the stage for graduation after dedicating yourself to four-plus years of course work is a badge of honor. As college students, we spend countless hours studying, completing assignments and reading textbooks. Why? I assure you that the reason is not merely boredom. All of us have different reasons that inspire our relentless efforts, but our end goal is the same. That goal is to receive a degree at the end For some of us, walking across a stage and receiving applause means everything, while it means absolutely nothing to others. The standing ovation does not excite them because they know their degree was earned by hard work and dedication. Why dress up and spend money on an outfit just to walk across a stage and receive a degree in front of people who we...
