2013 Iron Bowl Preview

By Darrell Puckett When children are born in the state of Alabama a question arises from friends and family.  Roll Tide or War Eagle?  It’s not like a newborn can answer that, but the question still is burned to their brain from day one.  Many families are split between rooting for Alabama or Auburn, so this becomes a rivalry in itself.  Every year the Tide and Tigers meet in an ending regular season Iron Bowl matchup that usually has huge implications attached to it.  This Iron Bowl is no different. Alabama is ranked number one in the BCS, and Auburn sits at four.  Vegas odd makers’ view the Crimson Tide at 10-point favorites, but the Tigers have beaten the spread every week but one.  The odds seem to lean towards Alabama, but who cares?  Who actually had Auburn being 10-1 at t...

The Pass That Changed Everything

The miraculous Hail Marry pass from Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall to reciever Ricardo Louis did more than just win the game; it brought back together a family. Doug Flutie made a similar pass to wide receiver Gerard Phelan to lift Boston College over Miami in the 1984 Orange Bowl.  Flutie had 28 seconds left to score, trailing 45-41 in the fourth quarter, and then it happened.  A pass that went 63 yards against 30mph winds went into the end zone and tipped until caught by Phelan.  Yes, this game happened 29 years ago, long before Saturday's Auburn win over Georgia, but there’s one similarity. The relentless pursuit to never accept defeat is what combines these two teams.  Flutie won a Heisman. Marshall isn’t in contention, but it’s deeper than that.  After a 3-9 season last ye...

Classic Rock Albums That Still Rock

By Jessica Klinner If you’re anything like me, you’ve lived your entire life believing that you were born in the wrong decade. You’ve dreamed of going back in time to Woodstock, envied those who got to watch Elvis perform live, and longed to witness the iconic years of the British Invasion. Nothing in your lifetime will ever seem to amount to the events of these musical time periods. Thankfully, the music of classic rock bands made a lasting impact on the world. As a result, we are still able to enjoy the music as if we were living during the time of its release. 1. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band- The Beatles When I was in middle school, I started going through a Beatles phase. I wanted their pictures all over my room, their music on my iPod, and their biographies on my bookshelf...

What is Snipping Tool?

By Matt Estes "Can you take a screenshot?" asks your resident technology guru when you have an end-of-the-world computer problem. "Erm... sure," you reply, inwardly befuddled. So what do you do? How do you take a picture of your computer screen? Do you run go dig out a digital camera from the storage closet? Do you try to take a clear picture using your cell phone? No. You use snipping tool. Snipping Tool is a built in program on the Windows operating system. It comes installed with Windows Vista and later, making it one of the only innovations Vista did correctly as an operating system. The steps to using it are simple. Open snipping tool. Select "New Snip." Drag the cursor over what you want to save as a picture. Save the picture or copy it to your clipbo...

Wellness Blog: Eating Out

By Nikki Headley You go to a restaurant and you find yourself eyeing a big juicy cheeseburger. You know that if you eat that cheeseburger it will throw off all of your hard work of watching what you ate that day. You order it anyway. How do you eat good food and keep your body where you want it? Maybe if you follow some of these steps you can have your cake and eat it too. 1. Side Items So let’s say you do order that cheeseburger. So many people end up overeating not because they ordered a cheeseburger but because they order French fries and a baked potato with their meal. How about ordering a green veggie in the place of the fries. You can also order a baked sweet potato or sweet potato fries instead. This will make your meal much healthier than before. 2. Appetizers Many p...

The Elmore County Hero

By Darrell Puckett Every kid growing up playing the sport of baseball dreams to play in college and in the majors.  You start as a child at tee ball and work your way up to high school, but the dream of playing major league baseball circulates in your mind constantly.  Baseball is a sport requiring great skill, and it’s a talent you have to be born with. Tanner Hicks grew up in Elmore County and attended Stanhope Elmore High School.  His passion and love for baseball was obvious to anyone who watched him throw a baseball on the mound for SHES.  He soared with talent and was offered a chance to play for Central Alabama Community College prior to senior year in high school.  Before completing his two year degree at CACC he was offered a few NCAA Division I scholarship offers and Tr...
