Featured Features: Bohemian Rhapsody

Full of opinions, but free of spoilers.

If you’re a lover of the songs “We Are The Champions”, “We Will Rock You”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and of course the famous “Bohemian Rhapsody” you were probably pumped for the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. As someone who grew up listening to Queen I was super excited for this movie when I saw the first trailer, but at the same time scared that it would be a flop.

Rami Malek from Mr. Robot was our Freddie in this film and man did he perform. Throughout most of the film I forgot that I wasn’t watching the actual Freddie Mercury, but that’s what it felt like. I felt like I was watching Freddie speaking the whole time and not an actor portraying the famous rock singer. Rami Malek was phenomenal. Lucy Boynton played Freddie’s beloved girlfriend, and in my opinion, she wasn’t the best. There were multiple times I didn’t believe her and felt her fabricating her emotions. Everyone else for the most part was great! The actor who played Queen’s guitar player, Brian May, was a splitting image of Brian. They could be related they looked so much alike. Mike Myers played Ray Foster their label executive, and it was a very Mike Myers performance, if you know what I mean. He delivers a line that not so subtly refers to a famous scene in one of my favorite movies, Wayne’s World, that’s in all honesty cringey AF. Again, only my opinion.

Just so you are aware before you walk into this movie, it’s definitely a biopic through and through. So, some things were of course true but other aspects about Queen and Freddie’s life were dramatized especially when it comes to timelines, but that’s to be expected. There were parts of the movie that seriously lagged a lot and kind of took the wind out of the sails. I learned a lot about Freddie’s life I never knew and grew to have even more respect for the late singer. It was a fun movie filled with laughs and tears and amazing music. It wasn’t perfect but it was enjoyable. I always wonder with biopics or any work for that matter, dedicated to a late public figure how they feel about it on the other side. If they’re proud of it or cursing at it from the grave. The remaining band members had huge roles in producing and writing this film, so I would like to believe what we were shown was a close to real-life occurrences as possible. I hope Freddie is proud and I hope he’s happy about how the movie came out. Go catch Bohemian Rhapsody in theaters. Not only will you get a movie but you’ll practically get a concert out of it as well. For those wondering if the kids should assist you to this movie, I would say probably not. There is some drug use and a little bit of sexual scenes, but then again, it’s never too early to introduce Queen. It is only rated PG-13, so I would say make that judgement for yourself.
