Comparing Brands: Netflix vs Hulu

BY: Kaleria Jackson

Every college student either has an account or is using someone’s account. Netflix is a veteran. Hulu is a rookie. The battle between which streaming services are the best has been up for debate. Understanding which one is the best service is the hardest part.

Netflix started its streaming services in 1997, which is a total shock due to it becoming popular in the 2010s. Netflix first started out as a DVD-by-mail service with no late fees. As time went on Netflix turned completely digital streaming service. Hulu started its streaming services in 2008. Hulu’s streaming service was dedicated more towards network television rather than movies.

Each service has particular things about them that not too many people care for. When watching Netflix, you have to wait until after the season is finished on its regular television network before you can watch it on Netflix. Unlike Netflix, Hulu releases new episodes the day after it is released. That is if the network release new episodes to Hulu. Since Hulu is considered a live streaming service, the annoying part to watching Hulu would be the commercials. These small issues do not compare when it comes to the overall statement of the services.

Netflix has been praised on their original content that has been produced. Some of Netflix’s original content has become wide known and extremely popular to many. Content such as Orange is the New Black, 13 Reasons Why, Mudbound, One Day at A Time, Dear White People, GLOW, The Crown, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt are just a few of the popular content. There are around 700 original pieces of content that Netflix has produced that includes documentaries, television shows, and movies.

Hulu on the other hand has not produced as many original contents as Netflix but their original content is just as good. The Handmaid’s Tale, a Hulu original has been nominated for multiple awards. Winning a total of 17 awards for the Hulu Original series. This series has given Hulu credit for being able to produce award winning content. Hulu has recently been on the come up with deals for everyone. For college students, Hulu partnered with Spotify to give students free service once they buy Spotify premium for $4.99. Now if you buy the Spotify premium for students you get Hulu and Showtime. You get 3 services for the price of one. I searched the web to find any type of deals for college students that Netflix had to offer. Sadly I came up empty handed. This is where Hulu takes the cake. Many people look for deals that can benefit them in the long run and Hulu does just that.

The price of these streaming services is what really matters to us.

I have both Netflix and Hulu. I have binged series on both services. I have watched original content produced by them both. I can honestly say I enjoy both services. Each service has things that the other doesn’t have or offer. This could be my reasoning for keeping both services. For me it’s a tie on which streaming service is better.
