Secretary of State John Merrill announced on Feb. 1 that electronic voter registration is now available for Alabama residents. Voters can now register or update their information at www.alabamavotes.gov. According to Merrill’s office, this new application aims to save taxpayer dollars, as well as provide a convenient, secure option for registration. Upon completion of the online registration, the form is submitted electronically to the respective county’s Board of Registrars. Users are also able to print the application to mail or submit in person. “We want every eligible Alabamian to be afforded the right to vote, as well as participate in the electoral process, and the new implementation of electronic voter registration will allow them to do so,” Secretary Merrill said in a statement.
Alabama citizens must meet the following criteria to submit the voter registration application:
- be a United States citizen
- reside in Alabama
- be at least 18 on or before Election Day
- not be barred from voting because of a felony conviction
- not have been declared “mentally incompetent” in a court of law
For Alabama’s primary election March 1, the last day to apply for voter registration using the electronic application is Feb. 15. For the Nov. 8 general election, Oct. 24 is the last day to apply for registration.
