10 Pop Culture Inspired Halloween Costumes

By Jessica Klinner

It’s officially October so that means it’s time to start planning your Halloween costume. Maybe you aren’t trick-or-treating anymore, but there are still opportunities for you to get dressed up and enjoy the night. This year has already brought about some great pop culture costume ideas. Check out a few of the costumes I found to be noteworthy below.

1. Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus

We all tuned in on August 25th to watch Miley Cyrus make her reappearance in the music world. Little did we know what surprises she had in store for us. This Halloween you can relive Miley’s VMA performance by dressing up as Twerkin’ Miley complete with the unitard and foam finger. Get your boyfriend or guy friend to dress up as Robin Thicke and you’ll be the talk of the party. Exact replicas of Miley and Robin’s outfits can be found at spirithalloween.com.

2. Grumpy Cat

Instead of the typical rubber horse mask, why not mix it up this year? Grumpy Cat, also known as Tarder Sauce, became famous for her naturally upset appearance. We all love Grumpy Cat and now you can show your love by dawning the mask on Halloween. Pair it with a t-shirt that says “I Hate Everyone” and walk around hissing at people to create the perfect image of Grumpy Cat.

3. Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan

With the release of The Great Gatsby, the flapper look will be perfect for this Halloween. The flapper dress is stylish and sexy while still being classy. Get your closest guy friend or boyfriend to dress as Jay Gatsby and you’ll be the talk of the party. If you talk and act like the characters, it will make your evening even more fun. Cheers, old sport!

si dd4. Duck Dynasty

Whether you’d like to admit it or not, you’ve watched Duck Dynasty and liked it. There’s just something about this crazy bunch that make us feel better about our own lives. I believe the reason we love to watch Duck Dynasty is because, as Southerners, we all personally know an Uncle Si or a Willie Robertson. Throw on some camo, a fake beard, and a duck call to transform into a Robertson man. If you’re planning on dressing as Uncle Si, don’t forget your tea cup!

5. Ron Burgundy

With the release of Anchorman 2 just around the corner, it’s time for the legend of Ron Burgundy to return. Buy the famous suit and mustache at spirithalloween.com. Don’t want to go alone? Grab some friends and go as the entire Channel 4 News Team.  This way you’re bound to get into all kinds of shenanigans.

6. Catfish

Catfish the TV show has taken the country by storm. Rent a catfish suit, elect two friends to dress as Max and Nev, and spend the night pretending to solve Internet dating mysteries. Don’t forget your cameras to document the whole night!

7. Honey Boo Boo

Honey Boo Boo won over the hearts of American when she appeared on TLC’s Toddlers and Tiaras, but took the show on the road as the star of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. Wear a bright colored puffy dress, tiara, and carry around a toy pig (or a real one) to get the perfect Honey Boo Boo look. If you really want to get into character, walk around all night using words like “redneckonize” and “vajiggle jaggle.”

8. Royal Baby

This year the royal baby made it’s arrival, and no I’m not talking about Beyonce and Jay Z’s baby girl. Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed their son Prince George into the world and what better way to celebrate than using the birth as inspiration for your Halloween costume. To pull off this look, wear a baby costume and just add a sash or crown for that royal touch. To complete the look, get friends to dress as Prince William and Kate. This costume will stand out among the ordinary last minute outfits of all your friends.

9. Tobias Funke

Out of all the characters from Arrested Development, Tobias Funke is the best option for your Halloween costume inspriation. There are several different outfits to use for your portrayal of Tobias, but the best is Blue Man Group extra outfit. Paint yourself completely blue, wear cut off shorts, and don’t forget Tobias’s signature glasses. If I were a guy, this would be my go to costume this year!

10. Macklemore

Macklemore brought back the trend of thrift shopping when his single “Thrift Shop” hit the airwaves. Take a trip to the thrift shop or load up on your Grandpa’s clothes this Halloween to get the ultimate Macklemore look. A big fur coat and some fake gold chains should do the trick! If you’re feeling like going all out, ride around on a bicycle like Macklemore does in the “Thrift Shop” music video or maybe even get the same haircut!
