Curtiss Celebrates Fifth Birthday

Our favorite bird has turned five this year! February 22nd 2018 Curtiss celebrated his birthday with his closest friends at the final Women’s and Men’s basketball games. With cupcakes, prizes, and photo fun Curtiss rang in his fifth year in flight on AUM’s campus. Curtiss the Warhawk was named after the Curtiss P-40 fighter jet stemming from Montgomery’s rich military history. Curtiss and his family engage in on campus events as well as diving into the community to soar through events. If you or your organization would like to request Curtiss for an event you can request his through the AUM athletics webpage. Happy Birthday Curtiss and Bird is the Word! By Darya Farsinejad

AUM Students Participate in Higher Ed Day 2018

It’s a warm mid morning in downtown Montgomery where hundreds of college students from around the state gather to march to the state house for Higher Ed day.  In an effort to speak up about the price of college and the rises in tuition. With a university degree comes a big price tag. This annual event allows student’s voices, thoughts and opinions be heard. With bands playing, the crowd chanting and a unifying power of speech college students completed the march and gathered to watch Student Government officials all sign their names on a poster for the event. “Higher Education Day gives students the opportunity to share their experiences in public higher education with legislators who control our state funding. It is imperative that we show up and advocate for our university. We want legis...

“Weightless” Allows Audience Members to Fly Free

Neil David Seibel’s production of Weightless takes the audience on a journey into a fairy tale unlike any other. The show’s opening sequence doesn’t use a single word, yet still manages to captivate its viewers with otherworldly music and lights. The elemental characters dance and float across the stage, presenting themselves as mystical beings, setting the scene of a young girl swimming and floating in water. Before long, we learn that this particular girl, Lucie, is unlike any other. She laughs when she is distraught, she falls up instead of down, and she swims all day in a magical lake created by her mother. Oddest of all, the girl has no gravity; she is personified air. Seibel uses clever tactics throughout the show to simulate the girl when she floats away by utilizing the eleme...

Theatre AUM Now Showing “Weightless”

She is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts degree as a member of the playwright’s lab at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. “Weightless” is a fantastical and magical play that centers around a young boy named Caleb, a young woman named Lucie, Lucie’s overprotective mother, Marie, and her plotting aunt, Julie. The play exists in a world of magic. Lucie is cursed with no gravity and is bound to a lake. Caleb wanders in on the lake and that begins his love affair with Lucie. I spoke with AUM’s Director of Performance Studies, Neil David Seibel. He is also the director of the play. I asked h...
