LGBTQ+ Meetings Held Every Thursday

From 4 to 5 p.m. every Thursday, Taylor Center 158 becomes a safe space for LGBTQ+ students to gather and talk through identity-related thoughts and feelings. Sponsored by the AUM Counseling Center, these meetings cover many topics including relationships, disclosure, esteem, and body image. They also provide an opportunity to learn coping strategies for mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. The atmosphere is informal, and all students are welcome.

Pursuing graduate studies is a grueling process on anyone. It is invasive, personal, detailed and demands of the applicant and in-depth introspective consideration of intellectual understandings. Stefanie Soller-Lamm is an international student from Germany who graduated from AUM in December of 2016. She studied psychology and knew that the only thing that could bring her what she wanted, her own counseling practice, was graduate studies. Riverwalk Stadium to Host “Food Truck Mash-Up”

On Friday, November 24, Riverwalk Stadium in downtown will host the inaugural “Food Truck Mash-up.” Presented by the Montgomery Advertiser and the Montgomery Wind Creek Casino & Hotel, this event will feature over a dozen food trucks with food options including Cajun dishes, barbecue, doughnuts, Italian ice, and more. According to the Montgomery Advertiser, the event will also feature 20-foot inflatable slides, giveaway prizes, music, and hot air balloon rides. The dugouts in the stadiums will be transformed into bars, for an atmosphere that reflects college football culture. People are encouraged to wear team jerseys, and to vote for their favorite food truck. Theatre AUM to Host Stage Reading of Dracula

Do you need a break from cramming for exams? Theatre AUM and AUM Connected will be holding a stage reading of Dracula on Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m., as well as on Sunday, December 3 at 2:00 p.m. The reading will take place at the theatre located in the Taylor Center. Communication and Theatre, and Fine Arts students, as well as alumni are the actors, technicians, stage manager, and director for the reading. Along with the actors who portray each character, there will also be three narrators who will read the stage directions. For those who have yet to experience a stage reading, it can be equated to being an audience for a radio play in a studio setting. Filibuster to Host Poetica, Accept Submissions

AUM’s student-run literary and arts magazine, the Filibuster, will host “Poetica” on Thursday, November 16 from 5 to 6 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 112. This event is an opportunity for writers to present their poetry and prose publications from earlier issues. All AUM students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend. Food, drinks, and Filibuster copies will be complimentary. Since 2008, the Filibuster has published yearly magazines to showcase student works including short stories, song lyrics, journal articles, plays and excerpts, screenplays, photography, and visual artwork. AUM Choral Groups to Host Fall Concert

AUMCappella and the AUM Chorus will perform their fall concert at 7:30 p.m. on November 30 in Goodwyn Hall 109. The show will feature a variety of genres, including classical, folk, spiritual, and Broadway, and will be open to all AUM students, faculty, staff, alumni, and performing arts fans. AUM’s choral groups are primarily for students, but have broadened to include faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the university. Life Told Through Podcasts: Top Five Podcasts to Consider

  Podcasts are what I would call the radio of the millennium. The platform is, in many ways, much like public radio. Some are actual public radio shows that are also on the podcast platform. The difference is that, unlike radio, podcasts are far more accessible, since there are so many ways to listen to them. Some of the podcasts that I listen to are often some of the “lesser known” shows to those aren’t familiar with the hosts beforehand. Many of these shows have a similar theme, which in my opinion, is why they are the top podcasts to listen to. Basketball season is upon us and it’s time for us to get hype! With our transition into Division II we have some very excited students on campus ready to cheer on our team. Preston Collins took his excitement and put a plan into action and with that we have a new student section, “The Curtiss Crazies.” With a relatively young campus he wanted to instill some more tradition on campus in hopes this would inspire others to feel just as passionate. “I just thought the Curtiss Crazies would catapult us into a traditional school when it comes to sports and actually have a student section so people would have a reason to come to the games besides watching our team play,” said Collins. Get Connected with the AUM Common Reading Program

About five years ago, the AUM Connected: Common Reading Program began at Auburn University at Montgomery. It was initially housed under the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching where the founder of the Warhawk Academic Success Center pushed for the program to implement the common reading program. As of this year, the program is officially under the WASC. Dr. Virginia Lacy, the Director of the WASC, says that the common reading program “exposes students to a book that they might not otherwise read and it gives a common theme or element for everybody to come around.” This semester’s common reading book is Dracula by Bram Stoker.
